Student Read-a-thons support Junkiri School in Kathmandu, Nepal

It’s a win-win situation in California, where students at North Hills Prep School (NHP) and at Casa Pacifica recently held “Read-a-thons” to support Junkiri School in Kathmandu, Nepal. By asking family and friends to pledge donations based on the amount of time their students read, everyone benefited - NHP and Casa Pacifica students read more, received service learning credit, and gained knowledge and understanding of an entirely different culture in a country on the other side of the planet, while students at Junkiri remain assured of an ongoing education. Highlights for the students included a powerpoint presentation about Junkiri and the children for whom they were raising money to buy books and supplies. They were fascinated with the Nepali students’ yoga classes, school uniforms, and field trips to local temples, and had plenty of questions about what students in Nepal learn in school.

In all, the Read-a-thons raised $1,000 at NHP and $200 at Casa Pacifica. Students at NHP, which is officially Junkiri’s sister school in the United States, also plan to raise money for Junkiri by holding bake and crafts sales, putting on talent shows, conducting raffles and silent auctions at school events, and by creating and selling holiday cards. Congratulations to NHP and Casa Pacifica students!
